The earthquake that struck Canterbury New Zealand on February 22nd 2011 at 12:51pm was a magnitude 6.3 earthquake and was considered an aftershock to the previous earthquake because it was of a lesser magnitude and but still occurred in the same region. This earthquake caused the
death of 185 people, due to secondary waves causing buildings to collapse and liquefaction to occur, although it was of a less magnitude that the September earthquake it caused a lot more cultural damage because it's epicentre was located a lot closer to the city.
